Mountain West Announces Staff Promotion

 

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thompson has announced the promotion of Gary Walenga to Assistant Commissioner – Business/Chief Financial Officer.

 

In his new role, Walenga will oversee all of the MW's budgeting, financial and human resources activities. In addition, he will continue to serve as the ticket coordinator for the MW Basketball Championships, and assists with ticketing for NCAA basketball tournaments hosted by the Mountain West in Denver.

 

Walenga joined the Mountain West on September 1, 2007 and assumed his role as Director of Special Projects in July 2010. Prior to changing roles, Walenga served a three-year stint as the MW's Assistant Director of Compliance, where he assisted in all areas of compliance for the MW. His duties included certification of coaches; processing incidental expense waivers, providing legislative updates, managing the Conference's National Letter of Intent program, and serving as the primary point of contact for interpretative support to the member institutions, as well as a liaison to the MW Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

 

A native of Chantilly, Virginia, Walenga is a 2004 Magna Cum Laude graduate of Virginia Tech University, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in finance with a concentration in accounting and a minor in global business. He received his Master of Business Administration with a concentration in sports business from San Diego State University in May, 2007. While at San Diego State, Walenga worked as an eligibility intern in the compliance office, specifically focusing on the university's NCAA Academic Progress Report (APR).
