2014 Mountain West Women's Soccer Championship Begins Tuesday

 

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The 2014 Mountain West Women’s Soccer Championship opens play on Tuesday with two first round matches. The six-team, single-elimination tournament will be contested at the San Diego State Sports Deck on the campus of San Diego State University. The winner of the 2014 MW Women’s Soccer Championship earns the Conference’s automatic bid into the 2014 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship.

All five matches will be broadcast live and for free on the Mountain West Network. Viewers can watch the tournament action at http://www.themw.com/#!/watch-live. Tuesday will see a pair of first-round matches, starting at 4 p.m. PT / 5 p.m. MT. Kicking things off is No. 6 Boise State (6-5-0 MW, 9-8-3 overall) taking on No. 3 New Mexico (7-2-2, 9-5-2). The Broncos won their last four games, all shutouts, to earn the sixth and final spot in the tournament. The Lobos were the last team to defeat the Broncos, winning their Oct. 17 contest 1-0 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Following the Boise State-New Mexico match at 7 p.m. PT / 8 p.m. MT, is No. 5 Utah State (6-4-1, 10-7-2) going up against MW newcomer and fourth-seeded Colorado College (7-3-1, 11-5-3). The two teams opened Conference play against one another and played to a 1-1 draw back on Sept. 26 in Colorado Springs.

San Diego State, which clinched its third straight regular-season championship, is the two-time defending tournament champion and enters the 2014 MW Championship as the No. 1 seed. The Aztecs finished regular-season Conference play with a 9-2-0 record (14-4-1 overall) to capture the top spot. Wyoming is the No. 2 seed, thanks to an 8-3-0 record in league matches. The Cowgirls (10-8-1 overall) and Aztecs each receive byes into Thursday’s semifinal round.

The winner of Tuesday’s first match will play Wyoming at 4 p.m. PT / 5 p.m. MT on Nov. 6 in the first of two semifinal matches, while either Utah State or Colorado College takes on San Diego State at 7 p.m. PT / 8 p.m. MT on Nov. 6.

The 2014 MW Women’s Soccer Tournament concludes on Saturday, Nov. 8 with the championship match, scheduled for a 7 p.m. PT / 8 p.m. MT start time.
