Colorado State's season ends with 3-1 loss to LMU


PALO ALTO, Calif. – The 12th-ranked Colorado State Rams saw their historic season come to an end with a 3-1 loss to Loyola Marymount in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the Maples Pavilion on the campus of Stanford University on Thursday afternoon.

The Rams (26-4, 18-0 MW) won their seventh consecutive Mountain West title this season, reaching their 21st straight NCAA Tournament. Loyola Marymount (23-8, 13-5 WCC) will play regional host Stanford in the second round tomorrow.

CSU overcame a pair of early two-point leads by LMU to take a 5-4 advantage, but the Lions would respond with six straight points, taking a 10-5 lead and forcing a timeout from the Rams. CSU would cut LMU’s lead to two on multiple occasions, but could not get closer, and a late 3-0 run would seal the first set for the Lions, 25-20.

The Rams took the lead to start the second set and never trailed. CSU could not grow its lead beyond two points with both teams boasting a high side-out percentage early, until a block from Acacia Andrews and Adrianna Culbert gave the Rams a 14-11 lead. Overall, CSU rode a 13-5 run to close the set, winning 25-16 while hitting at a .577 percentage and holding LMU to .103.

After a tight opening to the third set, LMU took its first three-point lead at 10-7, and then a four-point edge at 14-10, forcing a CSU timeout. Alex Reid registered a kill to finally tie the set at 17-17 for the Rams, but a 5-0 run by LMU immediately followed, and the Lions would take 8 of the final 10 points to win the third set, 25-19.

LMU took a quick 7-3 lead to open the fourth set, forcing a CSU timeout. LMU would hold the lead the whole way, going on to take the final set 25-15.
