Five Mountain West Baseball Student-Athletes Earn All-America Honors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Five Mountain West baseball players recently collected all-America honors following the conclusion of the 2017 season. The MW’s list of honorees included Air Force’s Adam Groesbeck, New Mexico’s Luis Gonzalez and Carl Stajduhar, and San Diego State’s Tyler Adkison and Danny Sheehan.

Groesbeck was tabbed a second-team all-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). The two-time All-MW selection, led the Mountain West in batting with a .410 average and posted a .649 slugging percentage and a .460 on-base percentage. A senior, he scored 60 runs and drove in 42 on an MW-high 91 hits. Groesbeck hit an MW-best 23 doubles, three triples and eight home runs. 

Gonzalez earned a pair of all-America accolades after garnering inclusion on the Perfect Game/Rawlings College Third Team and the D1Baseball Second Team. Gonzalez hit .361 in 2017 for the Lobos with eight home runs, 22 doubles (led team), 42 RBIs, 62 runs and a team-best 14 stolen bases in 55 games. He set a school record and is in the top 10 in the nation with 58 walks, helping him become the 12th player in UNM history to finish with a .500 or better on-base percentage in a season (finished the season with exactly a .500 on-base percentage). 

Stajduhar was a third team NCBWA All-America selection and an honorable mention Perfect Game/Rawlings College All-America pick. Stajduhar, a three-time All-MW selection, batted .350 in 58 games for the Lobos this season. A junior, Stajduhar led the league with 65 runs and 69 runs driven in on 83 hits with 34 walks. He hit 16 doubles, two triples and 17 home runs, and had an on-base percentage of .453 and .650 slugging percentage.

Adkison was named an American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings Third Team All-American and an Honorable Mention All-American by Perfect Game. Adkison batted .337 overall this season with 14 doubles, a triple, 15 home runs, 64 RBIs and 43 runs scored in 56 contests. In addition to leading the team in home runs, RBIs and walks, he was first in slugging percentage (.648) and on-base percentage (.445). 

Sheehan was tabbed an ABCA/Rawlings Third Team All-American. The 2017 MW Tony Gwynn Co-Player of the Year and a two-time All-MW honoree hit .344 with 17 doubles, a triple, seven home runs, 54 RBIs and 54 runs scored. He batted .398 in Conference play with 31 RBIs and 32 runs scored, and ended the season ranked among the top 10 in 11 offensive categories in Mountain West play.

Earlier this month Groesbeck, Stajduhar, Sheehan and Air Force’s Bradley Haslam were each named to the 2017 Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I All-American baseball teams by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.
