Five MW Men's Tennis Teams Open the 2016 Season Ranked in the ITA Top-75 Poll

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – With the 2016 men’s tennis season set to get underway this weekend, five Mountain West programs open the year ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) top-75 poll. Additionally, New Mexico doubles team of Hayden Sabatka and Bart Van Leijsen enter the season ranked No. 8, while Freddy Gelbrich of San Diego State is ranked No. 53 in singles play.

The Aztecs hold the top ranking in the Conference, coming in at No. 38 in the poll. Reigning MW regular-season champion New Mexico follows closely at No. 41. Boise State, the 2015 Conference tournament champion, is 59th, while Fresno State and Utah State are ranked 67th and 70th, respectively. 

Sabatka and Van Leijsen posted a solid fall season for the Lobos, going 14-4.  That record includes two top collegiate tournaments, the ITA All-American Championships and the USTA/ITA National Indoors. The pair has wins over the No. 4, 7, 10 and 13th-ranked teams in the country.  Of the duos four losses, three have come at the hands of the No. 2, 5 and 11 teams.

One of the Aztecs’ top singles player last season, Gelbrich was the Co-Mountain West Player of the Year in 2015. A three-time Mountain West Player of the Week selection, he finished the year with a 16-9 record and a 15-7 mark in dual matches, including a 12-6 mark in the top spot. 

The 2016 Mountain West men’s tennis season opens this weekend with seven out of the League’s eight programs in action.
