Five Teams Representing MW At 2015 NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving National Championships
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Five Mountain West women’s swimming & diving teams are sending representatives to the 2015 NCAA Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships, March 19-21, at the Greensboro Aquatics Center in Greensboro, North Carolina. MW swimmers and divers will compete in 18 of the 21 events at the national finals.
2015 MW champion San Diego State leads the group by sending three individuals and four additional relay swimmers to the meet hosted by North Carolina State. Sophomore Anika Apostalon will be swimming three events, including the 50-yard freestyle in which she placed seventh last season. She ranks sixth in the nation in the 50-free with a time of 21.82, eighth in the 100-free at 47.88 and 17th in the 100-yard backstroke (52.10). Senior Chelsea Bailey will swim the 50-yard freestyle (22.27) and freshman Summer Harrison will compete in the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly races (52.73 and 1:58.16). The team of Whitney Weisz, Laura Day, Taylor Johnson and Savannah Miller will swim the relays as the Aztecs qualified for the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:28.72), the 400-yard free relay (3:18.03), the 200-yard medley relay (1:37.60) and the 400-yard medley relay (3:35.19).
Nevada will be sending three individuals to the meet, including 2015 MW Swimmer of the Year Yawen Li and Diver of the Year Krysta Palmer. Li, a junior, will swim three events for the Wolf Pack, the 200-yard breaststroke (7th; 2:08.49), 400-yard individual medley (12th; 4:07.65) and 200-yard IM (1:57.59). Palmer, also a junior, qualified to dive in the 3-meter springboard and platform events with a pair of top-four finishes at the NCAA Zone E Championships on March 9-11 in Colorado Springs. Completing the trio will be sophomore Teresa Baerens swimming the 100-yard freestyle (49.14), 200-yard free (1:45.68) and 200-yard IM (1:59.16).
Boise State sophomore Brittany Aoyama and junior Sam Wicks return to the national meet and will compete in three events each. Aoyama qualified for the 100-yard butterfly (18th; 52.06), 50-yard freestyle (22.75) and 100-yard free (49.33). Wicks will also swim in the 100-free (49.41) and qualified for the 100-yard backstroke (52.64) and 200-yard individual medley (1:58.06).
Air Force sophomore Genevieve Miller returns to the national meet in the distance events, swimming the 500-yard freestyle (4:42.47) and the 1,650-yard free (16: 13.01). San José State’s Morgan McCormick, the 2015 MW Freshman of the Year, will make her debut at the meet by competing in the 100-yard backstroke (54.42), 200-yard backstroke (1:54.13) and 200-yard individual medley (2:00.41).
