Fresno State Secures Semifinal Meeting Against San José State at MW Women's Tennis Championship

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The No. 1 seeded Fresno State Bulldogs defeated the No. 9 seeded Utah State Aggies 4-0 on Friday to move onto the semifinals of the Mountain West Championship. Due to weather conditions in Fort Collins, the match between the Bulldogs and Aggies was moved inside to the Fort Collins Country Club.
The Bulldogs struck first when they clinched the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Mayar Sherif Ahmed/Rana Sherif Ahmed defeated Monika Van De Vondel/ Maggie O’ Meara 6-2, then Sophie Watts and sister Anneka Watts clinched the point with a 6-1 win over Sabrina Demerath/Ekaterina Tugarinova.
Fresno State won the first three singles matches, which ultimately provided the victory in the contest. Bulldogs' R. Sherif Ahmed won in straight sets against Demerath (6-3, 6-0), S. Watts (FS) defeated Tugarinova (6-3, 6-2) and in the No. 1 singles match M. Sherif Ahmed clinched the victory over Nini Guensler.
The Aggies finish the year with a 11-13 mark, the Bulldogs improve to 19-8.
The Bulldogs will play the fourth-seeded San José State Spartans on Saturday at 1 p.m MT at the Fort Collins Country Club. All semifinal and championship matches can be streamed for free on the Mountain West Network.
