Mountain West Announces Staff Hiring

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson has announced the hiring of Dan Johnson as assistant director of communications.

In his role at the Mountain West, Johnson will serve as the primary media contact for women's soccer, and men's and women's tennis, cross country and track and field. Johnson will also assist with football, men's basketball and the overall communications operation.

Johnson comes to the Mountain West with 13 years of experience in daily sports reporting and feature article writing for a variety of local newspapers. Most recently, he covered high school sports in and around the Denver metropolitan area for Colorado Community Media. Prior to joining CCM, Johnson served a one-year internship with the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

A native of Utica, N.Y., Johnson began his journalism career at his hometown paper, the Observer-Dispatch, covering the Utica Blue Sox, a former Class A affiliate of the Florida Marlins. Following a move to Florida, Johnson served as a freelance writer for several newspapers, including the Palm Beach Post, St. Petersburg Times, Baltimore Sun and Tallahassee Democrat, covering Florida State and Florida A&M football, as well as arena football and high school sports.

Johnson is a 2002 graduate of Florida State University where he earned a bachelor's degree in English/creative writing, with a minor in communications.
