Mountain West Board of Directors Wraps Up Spring Meeting

June 5, 2012

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The Mountain West Board of Directors (BOD) concluded its annual spring meeting here at The Lodge at Torrey Pines. Over the course of the three-day gathering, the institutional Presidents considered several agenda items of both Conference and national importance.

The BOD had a thorough discussion of league membership structure in the context of ongoing conference realignment within the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The Presidents mapped out a multi-faceted strategy designed to guide the Mountain West's decision-making process moving forward.

With regard to the Bowl Championship Series (BCS), support was expressed for the four-team playoff model as a progressive step, and the group discussed options related to bracket composition, selection process and competition venues. There was consensus for a conference champion component and playing the semifinal games within the bowl structure. The BOD did advocate for an equitable revenue distribution model which includes an academic performance element.

Today's final session included a conversation with NCAA President Mark Emmert which addressed the overall landscape of intercollegiate athletics, the ongoing Presidential reform agenda and the necessity of maintaining both integrity and student-athlete focus within the enterprise. The Mountain West Board of Directors conveyed its concern with the developing economic model that continues to marginalize a broad spectrum of FBS institutions who serve an important role in sustaining the value of media contracts and the BCS format.

Finally, the members of the Mountain West Board of Directors Executive Committee were named for the 2012-13 academic year. Colorado State University President Tony Frank will chair the BOD during the next year. He will be joined by outgoing chair Neal Smatresk, President at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; incoming chair Marc Johnson, President at the University of Nevada, Reno; and the MW's representative to the NCAA Board of Directors, John Welty, President at the California State University, Fresno. Dr. Welty will also serve the Mountain West on the BCS Presidential Oversight Committee.
