Mountain West Announces Men's & Women's Tennis Players Of The Week - Feb. 18, 2015

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –San Diego State junior Freddy Gelbrich has been named Mountain West Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, while San José State freshman Sybille Gauvain earned MW Women’s Tennis Player of the Week honors for matches played Feb. 11-17. It is the first career MW weekly accolade for both student-athletes.

MEN’S PLAYER OF THE WEEK
FREDDY GELBRICH, SAN DIEGO STATE
Junior, Isernhagen, Germany / Carl-Friedrich GauB Schule

  • Posted a 2-0 record playing at the No. 1 singles and doubles positions as San Diego State topped Pacific 6-1 on Feb. 15.
  • In singles play, defeated Miguel Diaz in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.
  • Teamed up with sophomore Hendrik Jebens in doubles and the duo scored a 6-1 victory over Diaz and Jose Chamba.

WOMEN’S PLAYER OF THE WEEK
SYBILLE GAUVAIN, SAN JOSÉ STATE
Freshman, Frejus, France / Lycee Albert Camus

  • Went 2-0 in singles play on the week as San José State won both of its non-conference road matches last week, topping UC Santa Barbara 6-1 on Feb. 14, and Cal Poly 4-1 on Feb. 15.
  • Playing at the No. 1 singles position, Gauvain turned back Santa Barbara’s Jaimee Gilbertson (7-5, 6-3) and Cal Poly’s Louise Oxvenad (6-2, 6-1) in straight sets.
  • Paired with freshman Abbie Pahz at No. 2 doubles, but did not finish either match as the Spartans clinched the doubles point with victories in the other two doubles matches.
