Mountain West Announces Women's Golf All-Conference Team, Freshman of the Year
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Mountain West Announced its 2015-16 Women’s Golf All-Conference teams and Freshman of the Year today, as voted by the league’s nine head coaches.
UNLV’s Kaylee Benton has been named the Mountain West Women’s Golf Freshman of the Year. Benton, who is currently ranked No. 68 in the nation according to GolfStat, recorded four top-10 finishes on the season, including a second-place finish at the Bison at Boulder Creek II. The native of Buckeye, Arizona, averaged 72.70 strokes per round, which was best amongst all freshmen golfers in the MW.
This is the second consecutive year that UNLV has produced the freshman of the year, and Benton is the seventh Rebel overall to earn this distinction. She joins Harley Dubsky (2014-15), Dana Finkelstein and Mayko Chwen Wang (2011-12), Therese Koelbaek (2007-08), Dal Sol Chung (2005-06) and Sunny Oh (2002-03).
San Diego State’s Emma Henrikson was named all-league first team for the fourth consecutive year. She was joined by Benton and Mackenzie Raim from UNLV, New Mexico sophomore Ingrid Gutierrez and San José State junior My Leander. Leander earned second-team honors last season.
UNLV’s Alexandra Kaui and Colorado State’s Katrina Prendergast, who finished first and second at the Conference championship last week, respectively, both earned second-team All-MW honors. They are joined by San Diego State’s Sirene Blair and San José State’s Regan De Guzman, who were also voted to the second-team in 2014-15, and Fresno State freshman Kristin Simonsen.
