Mountain West Softball Weekly Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The 2016 softball season gets underway this week with all nine Mountain West programs in action. Six teams, Boise State, Fresno State, Nevada, New Mexico, San José State and Utah State, head to Tempe, Arizona to take part in the ASU Kajikawa Classic. Colorado State travels to College Station, Texas for the Aggie Classic, while San Diego State treks to Fullerton, California for the Titan Classic. UNLV remains home, hosting the Sportco Kick-Off Classic. 

MW teams are currently slated to play eight contests against teams ranked in the NFCA/USA Today Top-25. Utah State and San José State challenge No. 22 Arizona State on Thursday, February 11. Fresno State goes up against No. 8 Tennessee on Friday, February 12 as does San José State on Saturday, February 13. Colorado State plays No. 7 UCLA twice, Friday, February 12 and Sunday, February 14. New Mexico takes on No. 18 Kentucky on Sunday, February 14 and UNLV plays No. 20 Washington on Monday, February 20.  

Fresno State was picked to repeat as Mountain West softball champions by the Conference’s nine head coaches. The Bulldogs collected eight of nine first-place votes. San Diego State garnered the remaining first-place nod and finished second.

San José State was tabbed to finish third, followed by New Mexico in fourth and UNLV in fifth. Utah State was picked sixth, while Colorado State, Nevada and Boise State were voted seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively.
