Aztecs, Bulldogs And Spartans Start Conference Play Off Strong
Three-time defending Mountain West champion San Diego State opened the 2015 Conference season with a 3-0 series sweep of UNLV at home last week. The Aztecs weren't alone in getting off to a 3-0 start in league play as Fresno State and San José State secured sweeps of Colorado State and Boise State, respectively. In other MW action, New Mexico earned a 2-1 series win over Utah State, taking the final two games after dropping Friday's opening contest.
San Diego State's Jordan and Fresno State's Compton Named MW Player And Pitcher Of The Week
San Diego State's Kayla Jordan has been named Mountain West Softball Player of the Week, while the Fresno State's Jill Compton earned MW Pitcher of Week honors for games held March 17-22. It is the second career MW weekly accolade for Jordan and fifth for Compton.
Jordan went 10-for-18 (.556) with three home runs, six RBIs, a double, walk and one stolen base to guide San Diego State to a 3-2 record last week. She had a hit in all five games, including two or more in four contests.
Compton won both of her starts over the weekend as Fresno State opened Mountain West play with a 3-0 series sweep at Colorado State. She pitched a total of 12 innings and allowed just two runs (one earned) to post a 0.58 ERA.
New Mexico's Beach Earns 100th Win Of Coaching Career
New Mexico head coach Erica Beach earned her 100th career win at New Mexico on Saturday as the Lobos topped Utah State 8-7. Beach picked up win No. 101 a day later as New Mexico claimed the series victory over the Aggies with a 12-2 win in six innings.
