Fresno State Maintains Slim Lead Atop MW Standings
With just two weeks remaining in the 2015 Mountain West softball regular-season, Fresno State maintains its narrow lead atop the league standings. The Bulldogs, winners of eight straight games and 14 of their last 16, are 17-4 in MW play and 36-14 overall. San José State is currently second with a 13-5 mark in league action, 33-16 overall, while three-time defending champion San Diego State is two games back at 15-6 (32-18). The Bulldogs are on the bye this week, while the Spartans host Nevada and the Aztecs are at Utah State. In the final week of the regular-season, Fresno state plays at UNLV, San José State is at New Mexico and San Diego State is on the bye. San José State possesses the head-to-head tiebreak over both Fresno State (2-1) and San Diego State (2-1).
Fresno State's Smith And Compton Named MW Player And Pitcher Of The Week
Fresno State’s Whitney Smith has been named Mountain West Softball Player of the Week, while the Bulldogs’ Jill Compton earned the MW Pitcher of Week honors for games held April 21-27. It is the first career MW weekly accolade this season for Smith, while Compton earns her sixth weekly honor this season and ninth of her career.
Smith went 4-for-5 (.800) at the plate with three RBIs, three walks and two runs scored in Fresno State’s three-game sweep of Nevada. For the week, had a .889 on-base percentage and a .800 slugging percentage.
Compton pitched in all three games of Conference-leading Fresno State’s home sweep of Nevada last week. In her 16.1 innings of work, allowed just three earned runs and struck out 25 batters to post a 1.29 ERA.
