Mountain West To Be Represented In MLB Playoffs
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Mountain West institutions will be represented in the Major League Baseball Playoffs by nine players and three staff members from five of its seven baseball-playing teams. Overall, the MW is represented on seven of the 10 MLB squads that have advanced to the postseason.
The Washington Nationals, the top seed in the National League, are home to the most individuals from Mountain West institutions with four, including manager Matt Williams (UNLV). Two-time MW Pitcher of the Year Stephen Strasburg of San Diego State, Fresno State’s Doug Fister and San José State’s Kevin Frandsen play for the East Division winners.
Fresno State’s Justin Wilson and New Mexico’s Bobby LaFromboise play for the NL wild card Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates face the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday, October 1 for a spot in the NL Divisional Series against the Nationals. Former Bulldog Mark Gardner is the bullpen coach for the Giants.
2008 MW Player of the Year Xavier Scruggs of UNLV and San Diego State’s Justin Masterson are members of the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals will face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the other half of NLDS. Rob Flippo of Fresno State is the bullpen catcher for the Dodgers.
Representing the American League are Quinten Berry of San Diego State and Efren Navarro of UNLV. Navarro plays outfield for the top-seeded Los Angeles Angels, while Berry, also an outfielder, plays for the East Division-winning Baltimore Orioles. Both teams begin action in the ALDS on Thursday, October 2.
