Mountain West Women's Soccer Weekly Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The 2016 women’s soccer season kicks off on Friday as all 12 Mountain West programs are set to take the pitch. In total, 20 matches are on this week’s MW schedule, including New Mexico traveling to face No. 19 Texas Tech and San Diego State hosting Pac-12 foe UCLA. Both contests are scheduled for Friday, with the Aztecs versus Bruins tilt slated to be broadcast on the Mountain West Network (MWN). Defending league tournament champion San José State opens defense of its title with a pair of home matches. The Spartans host UC Riverside at 4 p.m. PT on Friday, before playing Sacramento State at 12 p.m. PT on Sunday. Both matches will be streamed live on the MWN.
In the preseason Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll, San Diego State was tabbed as the favorite to win the 2016 MW regular-season title. The four-time defending regular-season champion Aztecs collected nine first-place votes and 119 total points overall. SDSU was followed by reigning Mountain West Tournament champion San José State (102 points, 3 first-place votes) in second and New Mexico (90 points) in third.
Wyoming (84 points) was predicted to finish in fourth, while Boise State (80 points) garnered the fifth spot. Following the Broncos, Colorado College (76 points) was sixth and Utah State (71 points) was tabbed to conclude the season in seventh. UNLV received 61 points to land in the eighth spot. Rounding out the poll were Fresno State (40 points), Air Force (34 points), Nevada (19 points) and Colorado State (16 points) in the ninth, 10th, 11th and 12th positions, respectively.
