San Diego State Wins Third Straight MW Women's Soccer Championship

San Diego State’s Katie Perry scored in the 96th minute to break a scoreless tie and propel No. 1 San Diego State past No. 2 Wyoming 1-0 in the 2014 MW Women’s Soccer Championship match on Oct. 8 at the SDSU Sports Deck.

Perry, a senior midfielder, was moved into scoring range off a nice touch from sophomore forward Morgan Darling and settled the ball with a pair of dribbles before she let loose a shot from just outside the 18-yard box. Wyoming junior goalkeeper Alex Boehm dove and managed to get a piece of the ball with her right hand, but it wasn’t enough to keep it from crossing the goal line and earning San Diego State (15-4-2) its third straight MW Women’s Soccer tournament title. For her efforts, Perry was named Most Valuable Player of the 2014 MW Women’s Soccer Championship.

The Aztecs, who earned the Conference’s automatic bid with the tournament title, have also won the last three MW regular-season championships.

Aztecs To Face Golden Bears In First Round Of 2014 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship

San Diego State, the three-time Mountain West regular-season and tournament champion, will travel to Berkeley, California, to take on the Golden Bears of California in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship, as announced Monday by the NCAA.

The first round match will take place at 2 p.m. PT on Nov. 15. The winner of Saturday's match will face either Mercer (14-5-2) or Florida (14-4-1) in the second round on Nov. 21, at a site to be determined.

California (13-5-2), ranked No. 22 in the latest NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Women’s National Poll, finished tied for fifth in the Pac-12 regular-season standings. Three of the Golden Bears’ five losses were to nationally-ranked teams.

San Diego State (15-4-2) and California met in the second round of the 2012 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship, with the Aztecs prevailing 2-1 at the SDSU Sports Deck.
