MW Men's Golf Championship Tees Off on Friday
The 2014 Mountain West Men's Golf Championship will be played on the Catalina Course at OMNI Tucson National (par 71, 7,144 yards) in Tucson, Ariz., April 25-27. It is the eighth consecutive year the tournament will be held at Tucson National.
All 11 Mountain West teams will participate in the 54-hole championship. Eighteen holes will be played each day (Friday-Sunday), with tee times beginning at 7 a.m. PT.
Defending champion New Mexico enters the tournament ranked 23rd according to Golfstat and is in search of its fifth Mountain West title overall. UNLV is No. 29 in the Golfstat rankings and is looking for its third overall championships and first since 2002. No. 38 San Diego State won back-to-back MW crowns in 2011 and 2012 and has finished as the runner-up on six other occasions (2013, 2010, 2009, 2006, 2003, 2001). San José State and Utah State joined the Conference in July 2013 and will each be making its first appearance at the MW Men's Golf Championship.
Individually, five MW golfers are ranked in the top 100 according to Golfstat. New Mexico junior Gavin Green leads the way at No. 31, followed by San José State sophomore Cody Blick at No. 35, San Diego State junior Xander Schauffele at No. 42, UNLV junior Kurt Kitayama at No. 67 and New Mexico junior Victor Perez at No. 99.
Six of last year's top-10 finishers at the championship return in 2014, led by the Lobos' Green, who placed third with a 4-under-par 209. San Diego State's Richardo Michelini was the highest placing freshman last year, finishing fourth with a 3-under 210. Air Force senior Kyle Westmoreland and Kitayama of UNLV tied for eighth at even-par, while Rebel junior Carl Jonson and Schauffele of SDSU both posted identical scores of 1-over to tie for 10th.
