UNLV’s Fedde Taken In First Round of 2014 MLB Draft

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – UNLV junior right-handed pitcher Erick Fedde was selected 18th overall by the Washington Nationals in the first round of the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Thursday, June 5.

The 2014 Mountain West Pitcher of the Year, Fedde is the eighth player in Conference history, and third in UNLV history, to be chosen in the first round. He is the second MW pitcher to be taken by the Washington Nationals in Round One since 2009, when the club took former San Diego State Aztec Stephen Strasburg with the No. 1 overall pick.

Fedde, from Las Vegas, Nevada, was 6-1 for the Rebels with a 1.60 earned run average in Conference play this year. He also led the league with an opposing batting average of .218 and was third with 61 strikeouts. His six wins ranked second in MW play. Fedde finished the 2014 season with a record of 8-2 and a 1.76 ERA.

Selections resume at 1 p.m. ET on Friday, June 6 with Rounds 3-10, followed by Rounds 11-40 on Saturday, June 7, beginning at 1 p.m. ET. The remaining rounds can be followed on MLB.com.
