New Mexico, San Diego State Roll Into 2014 MW Men's Tennis Championship Semifinals
FRESNO, Calif. – Second-seeded New Mexico topped No. 7 Air Force 4-0, while No. 3 San Diego State outlasted No. 6 UNLV 4-1 in the quarterfinal round of the 2014 Mountain West Men’s Tennis Championship on April 24 at the Sierra Sport and Racquet Club in Fresno, Calif.
The Lobos (19-7) and Aztecs (12-11) will square off in one of two semifinal matches on Saturday, April 26. Top-seeded and two-time defending tournament champion Boise State (26-4) takes on No. 4 Nevada (19-4) in the other contest. Both are slated for a 2 p.m. PT start.
New Mexico clinched the doubles point with a victory at the No. 1 position by Sam Iftikhar and James Hignett. The duo defeated Air Force’s Steven Young and Andy Jackson 8-4. Andy Van Der Vyver and Mads Hegelund earned an 8-3 decision for the Lobos at No. 3 doubles over Grant Taylor and Lucas Fumagalli.
Iftikhar won his No. 1 singles contest versus Jackson 6-2, 6-2, while Hignett earned the third New Mexico point with a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Fumagalli at No. 5. Van Der Vyver secured the match-clinching point for New Mexico at No. 4 singles with a straight set 6-4, 6-4 win over Air Force’s Alex Grubbs.
In the San Diego State-UNLV match the Rebels took the doubles point when Ace Matias and Denys Pume won in a tiebreaker over Thorsten Bertsch and Hunter Nicholas at No. 1 doubles 8-7 (2). UNLV’s Dimitar Petrov and Jakob Amilon won 8-5 at No. 3 over Jonas Meinzer and Andrianik Khachatryan.
Bertsch turned the tables on Matias in singles play, taking the No. 1 match 6-3, 6-3. Bertsch’s point secured the victory for San Diego State. Nicholas turned away Pume in straight sets 7-6 (2), 6-3 at No. 2 and Freddy Gelbrich won 6-4, 6-4 versus Tamas Batyi in the No. 3 match.
