MW Announces 2014 Softball All-Conference Teams And Individual Honors
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Mountain West announced its 2014 Softball All-Conference teams and postseason awards today as selected by the league’s nine head coaches. UNLV sophomore shortstop Garie Blando was named MW Player of the Year, while San Diego State sophomore left-handed pitcher Danielle O’Toole earned Pitcher of the Year honors. Fresno State junior center fielder Brenna Moss garnered Defensive Player of the Year accolades and Utah State third baseman Victoria Saucedo was named Freshman of the Year. San Diego State head coach Kathy Van Wyk captured MW Coach of the Year honors.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
GARIE BLANDO, UNLV
Sophomore, Shortstop, Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills HS
*Led the Conference in on-base percentage (.561) and runs scored (27).
*Was 38-of-81 at the plate in 24 league contests. The .469 average was second-best in league play, and her 38 total hits also ranked second.
*Had multiple hits in 11 games, including a 5-for-5 effort in a 12-9 win over MW Champion San Diego State on April 22.
*Blando was a perfect 11-for-11 in stolen base attempts. The 11 steals were tied for third-highest in MW action.
*In the field, Blando committed just six errors in 107 chances at shortstop. She had 39 putouts, 62 assists and turned four double plays.
*Blando is the third player from UNLV to win the MW Player of the Year award, joining Ashli Holland (2011) and Geney Orris (2002).
PITCHER OF THE YEAR
DANIELLE O’TOOLE, SAN DIEGO STATE
Sophomore, Left-handed Pitcher, Upland, Calif./St. Lucy’s HS
*Topped the league in wins (13) and ERA (2.15), while ranking second in innings pitched (117.0) and strikeouts (72).
*Conference opponents mustered just a .248 batting average against her.
*Appeared in 21 of the Aztecs’ 24 Conference games.
*Worked all 22 innings in San Diego State’s regular-season final series with Boise State. O’Toole allowed just one earned run and the Aztecs took all three games from the Broncos to earn their third straight MW title.
*Recorded nine shutouts and allowed two or fewer runs in 16 of the Conference games that she stepped into the circle.
*San Diego State has now earned MW Pitcher of the Year accolades nine times in the league’s 15-year history.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
BRENNA MOSS, FRESNO STATE
Junior, Center Fielder, Bakersfield, Calif./North HS
*The junior patrolled centerfield for the Bulldogs and did not commit an error in 41 chances in MW play.
*Her 1.000 fielding percentage was tied for the league lead.
*Recorded 32 putouts and nine assists, and also helped turn four double plays.
*Offensively, Moss led the MW in total hits (41) and stolen bases (22).
*She accumulated a .446 batting average, which ranked third-best in Conference action.
FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
VICTORIA SAUCEDO, UTAH STATE
Freshman, Third Baseman, West Covina, Calif./Bishop Amat HS
*Ranked in the top-10 of several offensive categories, including batting average (fifth, .408), slugging percentage (ninth, .632), hits (seventh, 31) and total bases (eighth, 48).
*Had multiple hits in eight league games, including a 4-for-5 performance in a 12-11 win on April 25 at New Mexico.
*In the field, committed just two errors. She recorded 12 putouts and 17 assists.
COACH OF THE YEAR
KATHY VAN WYK, SAN DIEGO STATE
*Earns her fifth MW coaching honor (2002, 2006, 2008, 2013) after guiding San Diego State to its third straight Mountain West title with a 16-8 record in Conference play.
*The Aztecs earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament and will be making their seventh consecutive appearance, 10th overall, in the NCAA Women’s Softball Championship.
