Crowded At The Top

By virtue of its 2-1 series win over San Diego State, Fresno State has moved into first-place in the Mountain West standings. The Bulldogs (23-14 overall, 8-4 MW), won the first two games of their home series with the Aztecs, before dropping the final game 2-0 in nine innings. Three teams are within a game of Fresno State, with San Diego State (29-11, 6-3) and San José State (23-16, 6-3) the closest challengers, just a half-game back in the standings. UNLV (17-23, 7-5) sits one game off the pace.

Six MW teams are in the top-100 of the latest RPI rankings released on April 14. San Diego State leads the way at No. 40, followed by Fresno State (45), San José State (72), Colorado State (81), UNLV (93) and Boise State (95) ... Nevada ranks second in the nation in doubles per game with a 1.78 average ... Colorado State leads the MW and is No. 13 nationally in runs per game. The Rams have scored 223 runs in 34 games, an average of 6.56 per game ... Boise State has stolen 78 bases through 39 games, an average of 2.00 per game. That mark leads the Conference and is tied for ninth-best in the nation ... Fresno State’s 13 triples in 37 games places the Bulldogs at No. 8 in the nation in triples per game with a 0.35 average ...San José State’s Jessie Hufstetler owns the nation’s 14th-best batting average. The sophomore infielder is hitting .452 on the season. Her .573 on-base percentage is the fifth-best in the nation ... Nevada’s Megan Sweet leads the nation in doubles per game at 0.45. Sweet has hit 18 doubles in 40 games for the Wolf Pack ... San Diego State’s Patrice Jackson’s 12 home runs this season leads the league and is tied for 12th-best in the nation. Jackson, who leads the country in walks per game (1.13), also ranks No. 9 in slugging percentage (.843) and on-base percentage (.566), while teammate Sydnee Cable is No. 14 in OBP at .542 ... Colorado State’s Chelsea O’Connor has driven in 49 runs this season, an average of 1.44 per game. That is the third-highest average in the nation. O’Connor also ranks tied for 11th in doubles per game at 0.38 ... UNLV’s Pauline Monreal has knocked in 44 runs this year, an average of 1.16 per game. That is tied for 15th-best in the nation ... The Rams’ Haley Hutton is averaging 1.15 runs scored per game, which places the freshman at No. 12 in the national rankings. Hutton has scored 39 runs in 34 games ... Fresno State’s Taylor Langdon has recorded four saves this season, just two shy of the nation’s top mark this year ... Boise State’s Tara Glover and Fresno State’s Brenna Moss are No. 17 and 18 in stolen bases per game, with Glover averaging 0.67 steals to Moss’s 0.65 ... San Diego State’s Danielle O’Toole is 21-5 on the season. The 21 victories is tied for fifth-best in the nation.
