Utah State Advances To Second Round With 2-0 Win Over Nevada
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Utah State, the No. 5 seed in the 2013 MW Women’s Soccer Championship, advanced to the second round with a 2-0 win over No. 8 Nevada on Nov. 4 at the UNM Soccer Complex.
The Aggies (10-6-4) will play host and fourth-seeded New Mexico (8-10-2) in Tuesday’s second round at 7 p.m. MT/6 p.m. PT.
"It's fantastic (to get the win),” said Utah State head coach Heather Cairns. “The way the tournament is structured, back to back, it's going to be tough. But I'm really proud of the girls. This is our first year in the Mountain West and the first year in the tournament, and it's our first win in the tournament. We made some history and hopefully it doesn't stop tonight."
Utah State controlled the pace of play in the opening half and were rewarded in the 39th minute when Ambryn McCallison scored her first goal of the season on a 25-yard direct kick to put the team up 1-0.
"I thought the girls did well,” Cairns said. “We had a couple goals coming in and one was to connect and pass a little bit and the second was to generate some scoring opportunities. I thought they flat out competed, when it comes to tournaments there's some x's and o's but sometimes it’s just about that will and that heart."
The Wolf Pack (5-11-4) had a couple of good scoring chances midway through the second half, but were unable to convert. The Aggies scored again in the 88th minute as Mari Miyashiro worked past two defenders and ripped a shot to the back of the net from 16 yards out.
"First of all congratulations to Utah State on their win, but I just thought that we were never able to really get control of the game, we were never able to get the flow or rhythm of the game the way that we would like to with our style of play and I think that's where we fell short,” said Nevada head coach Dr. Melissa Price.
