Nevada, San José State Advance To Women's Tennis Quarterfinals

FRESNO, Calif. – Seventh-seeded Nevada defeated No. 10 Utah State 4-0, and No. 6 San José State topped No. 11 Colorado State 4-0 in the first round of the 2014 Mountain West Women’s Tennis Championship on April 23 at the Sierra Sport & Racquet Club in Fresno, Calif.

The Wolf Pack (12-9) and Spartans (12-13) advance to Friday’s quarterfinal round. Nevada faces No. 2 New Mexico (15-7), while San José State takes on No. 3 San Diego State (11-12). Both matches start at 2 p.m. PT. The Aggies finish the 2014 season with a 13-9 record, and the Rams 3-14.

Nevada opened doubles play with a victory at the No. 2 position as Juliette Legendre and Sheila Smiley turned back Amber Stuhlmann and Katie Sweet 8-3. Utah State’s No. 3 doubles team of Lexi Turley and Nini Guensler scored an 8-1 win over Nevada’s Monika Magusiak and Caroline Konigsfeldt. Nevada secured the doubles point with a victory at the No. 1 position as Michelle Okhremchuk and Sheila Morales Hidalgo topped McKenzie Davis and Kallie Sperry 8-4.

In singles play, Magusiak clinched the match for Nevada with her win at No. 6 singles over Ashley Stuhlmann, 6-2, 6-0. Morales Hidalgo won at No. 2 singles over Sperry 6-1, 6-1 and Legendre earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles against Turley.

San José State won the No. 1 and 2 doubles matches to win the doubles point against Colorado State. Gaelle Rey and Marie Klocker scored an 8-2 victory over Adriana Wojakowska and Natalie Heffron at No. 1 doubles, while Jessica Willett and Julianna Bacelar topped Lauren Pick and Kaley Schultz 8-4.

Klocker won in straight sets at No. 1 singles over Heffron 6-2, 6-1 and Rey locked up her match over Wojakowska 6-1, 6-0. Sabastiani Leon Chao claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles against Pick.
