UNLV Tops Air Force In Opening Round Of 2014 MW Women's Tennis Championship
FRESNO, Calif. – Eighth-seeded UNLV rolled past No. 9 Air Force 4-1 in the opening match of the 2014 Mountain West Women’s Tennis Championship on April 23 at the Sierra Sport & Racquet Club in Fresno, Calif.
The Rebels (11-10) advance to Friday’s quarterfinal round and will face host and top-seeded Fresno State (13-8) at 10 a.m. PT. The Falcons close the 2014 season with a 13-9 record.
Paola Artiga secured the match for the Rebels with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles over the Falcons’ Lily Forlini. UNLV’s No. 1 and 2 singles players, Lucia Batta and Aleksandra Josifoska, won their respective matches in straight sets. Batta defeated Tiffany Tran 6-1, 6-1, while Josifoska turned away Mary Meyers 6-2, 6-1.
UNLV earned the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and 3 positions. Batta and Santa Shumilina defeated Natasha Rizvi and Meyers 8-5 at No. 1, while Josifoska and Iren Kotseva topped Marcelli Magday and Anastasia Hueffner 8-5.
Magday defeated Shumilina at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-4 to earn the lone point for the Falcons.
