New Mexico Sweeps Mountain West Cross Country Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – For the fifth straight year, the University of New Mexico swept the Mountain West cross country titles. The 2013 MW Cross Country Championships were held at the Eisenhower Blue Course on the grounds of the United States Air Force Academy.

The men, ranked ninth in the USTFCCCA Coaches Poll, won the eight-team men’s title, while the women, also ranked ninth in the coaches’ poll, finished first among 11 teams.

New Mexico’s men accounted for half of the top-eight finishes, en route to its fifth-straight team title with 32 points. Colorado State placed three in the top-10 to finish second with 51 points, while Air Force rounded out the top three with a third-place showing and 80 points.

Air Force’s Isaiah Bragg won the men’s individual title with a time of 24:08.39, while New Mexico’s Luke Caldwell and Adam Bitchell finished second and third, respectively, with times of 24:12.40 and 24:16.88. New Mexico claimed three of the top-four spots, as Pat Zacharias finished fourth in a time of 24:26.07. Wyoming’s Garrett Zans rounded out the top five, finishing fifth in 24:27.20.

With all five of its scoring runners finishing within the top 10, the New Mexico women captured its sixth-straight title (31 points). Boise State finished second with 60 points, while Colorado State took third with 117 points.

Emma Bates of Boise State easily claimed the women’s title, finishing in a time of 20:48.15. New Mexico’s Samantha Silva finished second in 21:12.10, while Boise State’s Marisa Howard placed third in 21:18.58. New Mexico’s Charlotte Arter and Air Force’s Hannah Everson rounded out the top five, finishing fourth (21:30.95) and fifth (21:41.07), respectively.
