Seventeen MW Student-Athletes Taken On Final Day of 2014 MLB Draft
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – UNLV junior right-handed pitcher Erick Fedde was selected 18th overall by the Washington Nationals in the First Round of the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Thursday, June 5.
The 2014 Mountain West Pitcher of the Year, Fedde is the eighth player in Conference history, and third in UNLV history, to be chosen in the first round. He is the second MW pitcher to be taken by the Washington Nationals in Round One since 2009, when the club took former San Diego State Aztec Stephen Strasburg with the No. 1 overall pick.
Fedde, from Las Vegas, Nevada, was 8-2 for the Rebels with a 1.76 earned run average on his way to being named the 2014 Mountain West Player of the Year. He also led the league with an opposing batting average of .209 and was fourth with 82 strikeouts. His eight wins ranked second in the league.
Friday Update: The Mountain West had six more players selected on Day 2 of the 2014 Draft, including three in the Third Round. San Diego State junior closer Michael Cederoth was the 79th pick overall by the Minnesota Twins, while UNLV got its second pitcher taken of the draft when John Richy was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers with the 98th pick. MW Player of the Year Jordan Luplow of Fresno State, an outfielder, was selected two spots later at No. 100 by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
