Mountain West Sends Three to Women's Basketball Postseason Tournaments

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –­ The Mountain West will send three women's basketball teams to national postseason tournaments.  Fresno State will move on to the NCAA Tournament with the league’s automatic bid, while Colorado State is headed to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament. Boise State became the first Mountain West team to accept a bid to the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI).


This year marks the 15th consecutive season in which the Mountain West has sent multiple teams to the postseason.  It is the 12th consecutive year, and 14th overall, that the MW will have a representative in the WNIT.


NCAA Tournament

Fresno State (22-10) earned the Mountain West automatic bid to the 2014 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament with a 77-67 win over Colorado State on Saturday, March 15 to win the MW Championship final. It will be the second-consecutive time Fresno State has represented the league in the NCAA postseason event. The Bulldogs, the No. 13 seed in the Lincoln Region, will face No. 4 seed Nebraska (25-6) in the first round at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles, Calif. Fresno State is making its seventh consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament (2008-09-10-11-12-13-14). The Bulldogs are 0-6 overall in the NCAA Tournament.


The Bulldogs will play the opening first round game on Saturday, March 22 at 1 p.m. PT. North Carolina State (25-7), the No. 5 seed, will face No. 12 seed BYU 30 minutes after the FS-Nebraska game.  Both first round games will be televised on ESPN2. The game time Monday’s second round matchup between the winners of Saturday’s games is set for 6 p.m. PT with television to be determined. All NCAA women’s basketball tournament games will be available on Watch ESPN and ESPN3.


Women’s National Invitational Tournament

Colorado State (25-7), the MW regular season champion, earned an automatic bid to the 2014 Women’s National Invitation Tournament. The Rams are making their fourth appearance in the WNIT and the first since 2004. CSU’s previous trips were in 2000, 2003 and 2004. The 1999-2000 and 2002-03 Rams’ squads advanced to the WNIT semifinals.


The Rams will host Big Sky member Southern Utah (22-9) on Thursday, March 20 at Moby Arena in Fort Collins, Colo. Game time is set for 7 p.m. MT. The winner will advance to play the winner of Colorado-TCU in the second round.


Women’s Basketball Invitational

Boise State (17-13) accepted an invitation bid to the 2014 Women’s Basketball Invitational.  It is the first postseason tournament appearance for BSU since the 2008 WNIT. The Broncos will travel to Phoenix, Ariz. to face WAC foe Grand Canyon (21-8) in the first round on Thursday, March 20 at 7 p.m. PT. The winner will advance to play the winner of the Stephen F. Austin-Texas State game in the second round.
