Seven Teams Representing MW at 2014 NCAA Women’s Swimming & Diving National Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Seven Mountain West women’s swimming & diving teams are sending representatives to the 2014 NCAA Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships, March 20-22, at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center in Minneapolis. MW swimmers and divers will compete in 16 of the 21 events at the national finals.

 

2014 MW champion Boise State and runner-up San Diego State lead the group with each team sending two individuals and additional relay swimmers to Minneapolis. For the Broncos, freshman Brittany Aoyama and sophomore Samantha Wicks will compete in three events each. Aoyama qualified for the 50-yard freestyle (22.54), the 100-yard butterfly (19th; 52.16) and the 100-yard freestyle (49.33). Wicks will also swim in the 50-free (22.52) and the 100-free (49.44) and qualified for the 100-yard backstroke (53.08).  Boise State automatically qualified to swim the 200-yard medley relay (1:37.75).

 

The Aztecs will be led by 2014 MW Swimmer and Freshman of the Year Anika Apostalon. Apostalon ranks fifth in the nation in the 50-free with a time of 21.76, eighth in the 100-free at 47.73 and 11th in the 100-yard backstroke (51.92). Senior Mikaela Macklin will swim the 200-yard individual medley (19th; 1:57.29) and the 400-yard individual medley (12th; 4:07.32). Both are expected to contribute to the relays as the Aztecs qualified for the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:28.65), the 400-yard free relay (3:16.60) and the 800-yard free relay (7:06.64).

 

UNLV’s Katelyne Herrington, a senior and three-time competitor in the NCAA finals, will swim in the 100-yard butterfly (6th; 51.48) and Rebel senior Rachel Dixon will participate in the 50-yard free (22.31). Nevada sophomore Yawen Li and Wyoming senior Morgan Hartigan are scheduled to compete in three events each. Li will swim the 200-IM (1:59.16), 400-IM (10th; 4:07.09) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:10.15). Hartigan will also swim in the 200-IM (1:58.37), along with the 100-back (52.98) and the 100-free (48.77). Air Force freshman Genevieve Miller will represent in the distance events, swimming the 500-yard freestyle (4:44.19) and the 1,650-yard free (16:19.17).

 

2014 MW Diver of the Year En-Tien Huang of Nevada and Hannah Prigge of Fresno State are the league’s two diving representatives.  The duo will dive all three events – the 1-meter springboard, 3-meter springboard and platform. Huang won the Conference titles in 1-meter and platform in 2014.
