No. 2 Boise State Advances To MW Championship Semifinals With 4-1 Win Over No. 7 Nevada

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – No. 2 seed Boise State advanced to the Mountain West Men’s Tennis Championship semifinals for the fifth-consecutive season after defeating No. 7 seed Nevada, 4-1, at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the campus of UNLV. The Broncos improve to 19-9 overall on the season and 12-0 all-time in the MW Men’s Tennis Championship. Nevada concludes the 2016 season with a 6-16 overall record.

Boise State rallied to win the doubles tally to jump out to a 1-0 advantage in the match. After Nevada picked up the victory at the No. 3 spot, the Broncos bounced back with a win at the top position from Kyle Butters and Toby Mitchell against the Wolf Pack’s Robert Allan and Andrew Poustie, 6-4. Lewis Roskilly and Thomas Tenreiro clinched the point for Boise State thanks to a hard-fought 7-5 win over Mile Cilic and Robert Margitfalvi

Boise State extended its lead in singles play with victories at the No. 4 and No. 3 positions. Butters ousted Allan in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, before Mitchell also earned a straight-set victory, defeating Cilic, 6-4, 6-4. 

The Wolf Pack responded with a win at the No. 1 spot, courtesy of Ryan Andrada. The senior knocked off Brian Foley in straight-set fashion, 6-4, 6-2, to pull Nevada within two at 3-1. 

Tenreiro put the finishing touches on the Boise State victory with a win against Poustie at No. 2. Tenreiro outlasted the Nevada senior in the first set, 7-6 (5), before earning a 6-2 victory in the second set.  

Boise State is now slated to take on the No. 3 seed San Diego State Aztecs in the semifinals on Saturday at 3 p.m. PT. The match can be viewed live and for free on the Mountain West Network.
