No. 2 Boise State Rallies Past No. 3 San Diego State In MW Championship Semifinals

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – No. 2 seed Boise State rallied from down 2-0 to defeat No. 3 seed San Diego State, 4-2, in the semifinals of the 2016 Mountain West Men’s Tennis Championship on Saturday. The victory pushes the Broncos to 20-9 overall on the year and places them in the title match for the fifth consecutive season. The Aztecs finish the 2016 campaign with an 11-14 overall mark.

San Diego State earned the first point of the match with victories at the No. 2 and No. 1 doubles positions. Sander Gjoels-Andersen and Hendrik Jebens downed Lewis Roskilly and Thomas Tenreiro, 6-3, at No. 2. Santiago Cevallos and Milen Ianakiev clinched the point for the Aztecs with a 7-5 win at No. 1 over Kyle Butters and Toby Mitchell, 7-5.

As action turned to singles play, the weather began to take a turn for the worse. With the first set complete on five of the six courts, the skies opened up and sent the match into a weather delay. The rain forced the contest indoors to the Lifetime Fitness Club in Henderson.

Upon resumption of play, San Diego State pushed its lead to 2-0 courtesy of a win at No. 5 by Marko Goles-Babic over Pedro Platzeck, 6-3, 6-3.

Boise State picked up its first point of the match from Roskilly. The No. 6 player ousted Raul de la Torre in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Butters evened the score for the Broncos by downing Gjoels-Andersen at the No. 4 spot, 6-4, 6-4.

The Broncos completed the comeback with a pair of thrilling wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions. Tenreiro gave Boise State a 3-2 lead with a 6-4, 7-6 (6) win at No. 2. Mitchell delivered the winning point from the No. 3 spot, rallying to defeat Ianakiev in three sets, 3-6, 7-6, 6-3.

Boise State looks to improve to 14-0 all-time in Championship history when it faces the winner of No. 4 UNLV versus No. 8 Fresno State in Sunday’s title contest.
