No. 2 SDSU Claims Third Straight MW Baseball Championship Title

RENO, Nev. – No. 2 San Diego State (40-21) was crowned 2015 Mountain West Baseball Champions as the Aztecs defeated No. 4 New Mexico (37-27) 6-4 in the title game on Sunday afternoon. This is the Aztec’s third consecutive MW Championship title. SDSU earns the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with today’s victory.

Spencer Thornton had two RBIs in his 2-for-4 performance this afternoon. Danny Sheehan also went 2-for-4 for San Diego State, driving in two runs. Tournament MVP Seby Zavala went 2-for-3 in the championship game, bringing in a run and scoring one himself.

“I can’t do this without my teammates,” Zavala said after receiving the MVP trophy. “They’re a big part of this.”

The Aztecs struck in the bottom of the first. Steven Pallares led off with a single to right field. Back-to-back groundouts moved the senior over to third, and a single up the middle from Spencer Thornton drove him home to give SDSU the early 1-0 lead.

New Mexico took the lead in the top of the second inning when, with a runner on second, Jack Zoellner sent one off the scoreboard, driving in two runs for his seventh RBI of the tournament.

In the bottom of the third, Zavala found himself on second base with one out after singling and advancing on a balk. Thornton stepped up to the plate in the next at-bat, singling to center field. Zavala rounded third and slide home, getting around the catcher to tie things up 2-2.

Ty France hit a lead-off double in the bottom of the fifth, and was brought home by a single from Zavala to break the tie and put the Aztecs up 3-2.

Zoellner tied it up again with his third RBI of the game in the top of the sixth. The sophomore tournament standout doubled to the wall in left field to bring Carl Stajduhar home, putting the score at 3-3. The Lobos then took the lead 4-3 when Zoellner scored off a double-play ground ball.

The Aztecs tied it up yet again in the bottom of the sixth with runners on first and second and one out. Pallares stepped up to bat and grounded out to short, but Justin Wylie was able to score to tie it up at four. Trejo advanced to third on the play. Then Sheehan got his first hit of the game when he doubled down the left field line to bring Trejo home and give SDSU a 5-4 lead.

Trejo led off the bottom of the eighth with a double to right field. The Aztecs tacked on a much-needed security run when Sheehan singled to bring him home. Headed into the final frame, SDSU led New Mexico 6-4.

The Lobos put two runners on base in the top of the ninth, but left them stranded, ending the game.

“When we go on the bus that night (after the first game loss), I said we have them right where we want them,” said Mark Martinez, skipper for the Aztecs. “Our guys responded. We got after it offensively.”

Zoellner brought in all three of New Mexico’s earned runs this afternoon in a 2-for-3 performance.
