No. 3 New Mexico Defeats No. 6 UNLV in MW Quarterfinals
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Third-seeded New Mexico used two second-half goals to defeat No. 6 UNLV, 2-0, Tuesday night at a chilly and wet SDSU Sports Deck. With the victory, the Lobos improve to 10-8-1 overall. The Rebels, meanwhile, fall to 11-10.
UNM received what would be the game-winner in the 53rd minute when Alyssa Coonrod found herself all alone along the left flank. The midfielder then sent a skidding cross through the box where Lindsey Guice knocked in her shot from seven yards out. The goal was Guice’s fourth of the year.
Then in the 71st minute, Emily Chavez took a free kick from beyond the midfield line and Guice flicked the ball off her head just in front of UNLV goalkeeper Jessie Clark. Claire Lynch beat Clark to the ball and pushed her shot into the back of the net for her fifth goal of 2015.
UNLV finished with a 14-13 advantage in shots, but it was New Mexico that put seven on goal compared to the Rebels’ five. UNM also enjoyed an edge in corner kicks, 5-4.
Lynch led New Mexico with four shots, all of which were on target, while Guice and Maddie Irwin each had three attempts apiece. For UNLV, Denali Murnan led all Rebels with four shots and three shots on goal. Each goalkeeper, Clark and UNM’s Cassie Ulrich, both had five saves.
The Lobos move on to Thursday’s semifinal round vs. second-seeded San José State. First tap is scheduled for 4 p.m. PT atop SDSU Sports Deck. The game will be streamed live on the Mountain West Network.
