No. 4 Colorado College Rallies Past No. 5 Utah State 3-1

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Down 1-0 at halftime, fourth-seeded Colorado College rattled off three second half goals in a 14-minute span, two by senior midfielder Jessie Ayers, to take down No. 5 Utah State 3-1 in the opening round of the 2014 Mountain West Women’s Soccer Championship on Nov. 4 at the SDSU Sports Deck.

The Tigers (12-5-3) advance to Thursday’s semifinal round with the win and will take on host and top-seeded San Diego State (14-4-1) at 7 p.m. PT. Utah State ends its 2014 season with a 10-8-2 record.

Ayers started the Tigers’ scoring with a great run up the left flank. After working past a Utah State defender, Ayers played a touch to teammate Sarah Schweiss, who then pushed the attack before sending Ayers towards the goal with a pinpoint pass. Ayers’ shot was true and evened the match in the 63rd minute.

Five minutes later, Colorado College grabbed the lead when senior defender Jordan Savold played a ball into the box and Schweiss, a junior midfielder, chipped it into the net. Ayers struck again in the 77th minute, finishing off a set piece sent in from senior forward Rachel Herron.

Utah State controlled the pace of play in the first half and after a few quality scoring chances, found the back of the net in the 23rd minute when senior defender Brooke Larson-Leavitt played a corner kick into the box that was headed in by sophomore midfielder Lauren Harmon. It was Harmon’s first goal of the 2014 season.

Colorado College freshman goalkeeper Rowan Frederiksen finished with two saves, while Utah State junior keeper Jeannie Woller turned away three shots.
