SAAC Participation In MW Governance Structure Set To Increase

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – In keeping with the Mountain West’s progressive approach towards student-athlete participation in the Conference governance structure, the league’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) members will participate in monthly conference calls and other official Conference business during the 2014-15 academic year.

The SAAC members participating with these groups will be responsible for voicing the opinion of the MW student-athletes on various issues, as well as providing reports to the full SAAC on the various calls during SAAC conference calls and in-person meetings.

“Having representation throughout the Mountain West governance structure is another great step forward for student-athletes,” said San Diego State junior and MW SAAC Vice-Chair, Nika Sedghi. “To be in the room or on the calls when decisions are being made, it will be nice for us to give the perspective of the student-athlete so the administrators know and understand our point of view. I think this move will help improve the overall student-athlete experience.”

In June 2014, the MW Board of Directors invited two members of the MW SAAC to their in-person meeting for the first time in Conference history. The Board felt it was a great opportunity to include the voice of the student-athlete, and expressed support for continued involvement in future Board meetings.

The Board also emphasized the importance of student-athlete involvement in other areas of the MW governance structure. Mountain West SAAC representatives will now have representation with the Joint Council, Athletic Directors, Faculty Athletic Representatives, Senior Woman Administrators and Compliance Coordinators.

“The Mountain West Board of Directors have made it clear the voice of the student-athlete is paramount in the decision-making process of the league membership,” said MW Commissioner Craig Thompson. “From student-athlete involvement this past summer at our BOD meeting, to the increased participation in Conference business this year, the Mountain West is committed to providing the student-athlete access to all levels of our governance structure.”
