San José State Defeats Boise State to Advance to Semifinals of MW Women's Tennis Championship

GREELEY, Colo. – San José State becomes the first team to advance to Saturday’s semifinals after a 4-1 victory over Boise State at Work Out West Fitness and Tennis in Greeley, Colorado.

The Broncos jumped all over the Spartans, quickly winning the doubles point with victories on the No. 1 and 3 courts. Boise State’s Hanna Kantenwein/Milena Toseva, who usually compete at the No. 2 doubles position, cruised to a 6-1 win over Marie Klocker/Sybille Gauvain. The Broncos’ Nancy Menjivar/Teal Vosburgh won 6-2 against SJSU’s Justine Deleval/Gaelle Rey.

In singles play, San José State opened by winning the first set on all four courts. Boise State responded by winning the second set on three of the four sets, only Spartans’ Gaelle Rey swept her opponent, defeating Bobbi Oshiro 6-4, 6-3. SJSU earned three-set wins in order at No. 2 (Klocker 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 over Vosburgh), No. 4 (Marine Dans 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 over Megan LaLone) and No. 1 (Gauvain 7-5, 6-7 (7-9), 6-0 over Kantenwein).

The Spartans will play the winner of No. 1 Fresno State vs. No. 9 Utah State, which is scheduled to be played on Friday at 1 p.m. MT. This is the second consecutive season that SJSU has advanced to the semifinals. In 2015, the Spartans were defeated by No. 2 New Mexico 4-3.

With the loss, the Broncos finish the 2015-16 season at 12-10, while the Spartans improve to 12-9.
