SAN DIEGO – San Diego State is ranked 17th in the preseason USA Today Coaches' Top-25 Poll. The preseason ranking is the highest, regardless of poll, in school history. Thursday’s news also marks the second time in school history the Aztecs have enjoyed a preseason Coaches' top-25 ranking.
SDSU, the overwhelming favorite to capture the 2014-15 Mountain West regular-season championship, last found itself in the preseason Coaches' poll at the start of the 2012-13 campaign when it opened at a then-program-record-best 20th. San Diego State was also No. 20 in the preseason Associated Press Top 25.
Last season, the Aztecs began to receive votes on Dec. 2, after winning the DIRECTV Wooden Legacy, before entering at No. 24 on Dec. 9. From that point forward, San Diego State remained the poll, rising to as high as No. 5 for three consecutive weeks in late January to early February.
All told, SDSU found itself in the Coaches' poll the final 15 weeks of the season entering the NCAA tournament, which included five straight weeks in the top 10 and seven overall. The Aztecs ended the season at No. 12 in the postseason edition of the Coaches' poll. With the inclusion of the postseason top-25 and this year’s preseason rankings, San Diego State has appeared in the poll for 17 consecutive weeks, which is the 11th-longest streak in the nation.
The Aztecs, who return a pair of preseason All-MW selections (Dwayne Polee II and Winston Shepard) and the league’s preseason newcomer of the year (Angelo Chol), open the campaign with an exhibition vs. Point Loma on Friday, Nov. 7, inside Viejas Arena. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT. One week later on Friday, Nov. 14, CSUN heads to Montezuma Mesa for San Diego State’s season opener. That contest is also slated for a 7 p.m. PT start and will air on FOX Sports San Diego.
