Several Mountain West Student-Athletes Named To 2015 Preseason Baseball Watch Lists

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The preseason recognition continues to roll in for Mountain West baseball student-athletes as they prepare for the start of the 2015 season on Friday, February 13.

Nevada senior Austin Byler was one of 50 players named to the 2015 Golden Spikes Award watch list, announced by USA Baseball on February 10. The Wolf Pack first baseman is a unanimous preseason All-American selection and the only MW player named to the initial watch list. The Golden Spikes Award is given annually to the top amateur baseball player in the country. Byler is coming off of an All-MW and All-Region season in 2014, leading the Conference in slugging percentage and home runs while batting .326.

Two Mountain West closers made the list of 37 players named to the 2015 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Stopper of the Year watch list on February 10, presented to the top relief pitcher each season.

New Mexico junior Victor Sanchez and UNLV junior Brayden Torres made the watch list after strong performances in 2014. Sanchez had a career year in which he post the second-most saves in a season at UNM with 10. He finished with a 4-1 record and a 2.33 earned run average in 22 appearances. Torres tied a school record with nine saves last year. He sported a 2-1 record and a 1.93 earned run average in 22 trips to the mound.
