Six MW Players Garner Recognition On A Pair Of National Award Watch Lists
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Six Mountain West football specialists were tabbed to preseason national award watch lists on Thursday. The Lou Groza Award watch list, which honors the nation’s top place-kicker, features Boise State senior Tyler Rausa and Nevada senior Brent Zuzo. The Ray Guy Award watch list, which recognizes the top collegiate punter in the nation, includes a pair of juniors and 2015 finalists Hayden Hunt of Colorado State and San José State’s Michael Carrizosa, as well as seniors Alex Boy and Ethan Wood of Nevada and Wyoming, respectively.
Rausa was a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award in 2015, a season in which he was named to the All-Mountain West First Team after setting the Mountain West single-season scoring record for kickers with 134 points. Zuzo made 17-of-19 (.895) attempts as a junior in 2015, earning Second-Team All-Mountain West honors while leading the conference and ranking fourth nationally in field goal percentage.
A 2015 All-Mountain West Second Team honoree and All-American, Hunt ranked fifth nationally with an average of 46.0 yards per punt. Carrizosa was named First-Team All-Mountain West and a Second-Team All-American by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and the Walter Camp Football Foundation last season. Boy averaged 42.0 yards per punt last season, while Wood averaged 41.2 yards per punt. Both Boy and Wood were named to the watch list in 2015.
