Spartan Women's Golf Wins Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational; Osland Co-Medalist
SAN JOSE, Calif. - Three Spartans shot par or better and helped the San José State women’s golf team win the 2015 Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational Tuesday afternoon at the Almaden Golf & Country Club. Senior Megan Osland was part of that trio and won her second title of the year as she was co-medalist with Martina Edberg of Cal State Fullerton.
After a rough beginning of the tournament, the Spartans bounced back in the third round, shooting an even-par 288 and finishing at 897. San José State won its own tournament for the first time since the 2007 season. First-day leader Fresno State had a 12-shot lead heading into the final round but shot 302 (+14) to finish second at 899.
Osland won her second tournament of the year with her co-medalist honors. She and Edberg were tied for third heading into the final round, and each shot 70 on Tuesday to tie for first at 219. Osland made four birdies and 12 pars during her round, while Edberg shot a 32 on holes 10-18 (she started on #16), making a birdie on #15, her final hole of the day, for the tie.
My Leander was in contention for individual medalist honors for much of the day as she shot a 72 finished third at 221. She made four birdies during her round to go with 10 pars
Kathleen Rojas also shot par 72 for the Spartans and finished tied for 29th at 236. Regan De Guzman shot a 74 and tied for 12th at 230. Elizabeth Schultz rounded out the scoring with a 78 and finished tied for 23rd at 233. Playing as an individual, Fanny Johansson shot the best round of her short Spartan career with a one-under 71 and tied for 17th at 231.
"This took a total team effort today," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "We made 17 birdies on the round. Megan and My did great for us today, and Kathleen and Regan kept us in contention with their play. I am really happy for us."
The Spartans play at Bay Area Classic on March 9 & 10 at the Meadow Club in Fairfax.
