FRESNO, Calif. -- The Fresno State swimming and diving team started the New Year strong with a 173-125 win over CSU Bakersfield and fell short to UNLV, 168-126. CSU Bakersfield also fell to the UNLV Rebels 188-96 at the first double-dual meet of the season.
"I am really, really proud of our teams' performance today," said head swimming and diving coach Jeanne Fleck. "We came together as a team today, we've overcome some adversity and it's great to see the team working this hard for each other."
Seniors Dani Yoho and Stacey Luke both had standout performances in their respective events. Sprinter Yoho won the 50 Free with a 23.77 defeating her next opponent by over a half of a second. One of Yoho's preseason goals was to remain undefeated in the 50-yard free through all dual meets, which she still is maintaining.
Diver Stacey Luke dominated both the 1- and 3-meter board winning both events scoring a 282.05 (1-meter) and 276.60 (3-meter). This is the second time Luke has won both the boards this season, the first time occurring in the home meet on Oct. 12.
"Dani [Yoho] and Brittany [Buna] did a great job winning their respective events, defeating swimmers from both CSU Bakersfield and UNLV," said Fleck. "Stacey [Luke] also did an outstanding job winning both the 1- and 3-meter board. I was really happy with what I saw today from our team."
Junior Brittany Buna won the 400 IM with a time of 4:35.65 defeating the second place finisher by more than two seconds.
Junior Michelle Dockendorf had a solid day of swimming finishing second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:25.26. Sophomore Alex Madsen also had some great swims finishing third in the 100 backstroke (58.92) and second in the 200 backstroke (2:04.77). Sophomore Courtney Sheehan finished third in the 500 free (5:13.59) and second in the 1000 free (10:38.59) as well.
"Overall I am really happy with how our team performed today to start the New Year," said Fleck. "We reported back on December 29 and have been doing two- and three-a-days since. Tomorrow will be their first day off since we've been back, so they are working really hard.
"We are really getting into the toughest training of our season so these next couple weeks are going to be really grueling. We have started our pace training and we will continue that for the next two weeks or so. I'm happy with how we swam today and I am excited to see the girls swim at the next meet."
The Bulldog divers will head to the UCLA Diving Invite next weekend Jan. 11-12 and the swimmers will compete at the Beach Cup in Los Angeles on Jan. 18-19, 2013.
