LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's swimming team kept its winning streak alive, finishing the regular season with a 166.5-131.5 victory over previously undefeated Wyoming, while the UNLV women came up two points shy, falling to the Cowgirls 151-149 on Saturday afternoon from Buchanan Natatorium. The Rebels won their eighth straight meet to move to 8-1 on the year with the win over the Cowboys (8-1). UNLV dropped to 4-5 on the women's side, while the Cowgirls improved to 6-1.
UNLV began the men's meet with a 1-2 finish in the 200 medley relay. Henrique Machado, David Szele, Cody Roberts and Guilherme Passos posted the winning time of 1:29.18 for the Rebels. After Wyoming won the 1000 free and 200 free, UNLV claimed wins in four straight events. First was Machado in the 100 back (48.63), followed by Szele in the 100 breast (55.71), Balint Batka in the 200 fly (1:46.69) and Dillon Virva in the 50 free (20.52).
Other wins followed in the 100 free from Samuel Lameynardie with a time of 45.29, Giacomo Gremizzi in both the 200 breast (2:04.79) and the 200 IM (1:48.95) and Roberts in the 100 fly (48.35). Diver Lucas James posted a career-best 301.58 on the 3-meter board to claim first place for UNLV as well. The Rebels' 400 free relay squad of Virva, Roberts, Szele and Lameynardie closed out the meet with a first place swim, touching the wall in 3:01.89.
Three double-event winners paced the UNLV women's team, including a pair of seniors in their last home meet. Junior Jessica Heim won the distance events, swimming the 500 free in a time of 5:00.01 and the 1000 free in 10:14.70. Senior Carmen Robb won the back events, claiming the 100 in 54.40, and touched the wall in 1:59.15 to win the 200 back. Classmate Nakayla Chan meanwhile was the top breaststroker of the day, winning the 100 (1:04.10) and 200 (2:20.88) events.
The other two wins for UNLV came in the relays, with Robb, Chan, Katelyne Herrington and Rachel Dixon winning the 200 medley with a time of 1:41.44. Dixon, Julia Fehervari, Heim and Herrington won the second relay, the 400 free, after touching the wall in 3:27.42 to just out-touch the Cowgirls.
Next up for both Rebel teams are their respective conference championships. The UNLV men will go to Monterey Park, Calif. on Feb. 20-23 for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships, while on the same dates the women will be in San Antonio, Texas, for the Mountain West championships.
