TCU Records Continue to Tumble at C-USA Invitational
Feb. 16, 2012
HOUSTON – Two more TCU records fell Thursday evening at the Conference USA Invitational inside the University of Houston’s Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium.
Sophomore Sebastian Arispe started the evening on a strong note for the Horned Frogs, notching a TCU record in the 500-free. He touched the wall in 4:25.57, just behind the first-place finisher, who swam a 4:24.90.
His mark bettered a 22-year old TCU record by nearly a second and just missed an NCAA “B” qualifying standard. The previous TCU all-time mark was 4:25.86 and was set by Ron Forrest in 1990. In the event, Arispe finished just ahead of teammate Michael Franz, who clocked a 4:26.24.
Laszlo Gyurko, Edgar Crespo, Luiz Azarias and Devin Price set a TCU relay record for the second-straight night when they touched the wall in 3:12.00 for the 400-medley relay. It was well better than the “B” qualifying mark of 3:17.63 and faster than the previous TCU record of 3:12.50.
In the 200-individual medley, TCU notched a 2-3-4-5 finish with freshman Matt Korman leading the way in 1:49.51. The Magnolia, Texas, native’s time is No. 3 all-time at TCU. Crespo finished behind him with a 1:50.06, which is the fourth-best time in TCU history.
Freshman Cooper Robinson finished in fourth place in the event with a 1:50.42, good for the fifth-best all-time mark at TCU. In sixth was freshman Mitch Adshead in a time of 1:51.25.
In the night’s other event, the 50-free, Price finished fifth in 20.43 and Ryker Saunders was eighth with a 21.27.
From a team standpoint, TCU kept pace with the meet-leading Mustangs, which entered the day with a 29-point lead. The margin stayed the same through day two as SMU leads with 351 points and TCU is second with 322.
With the Mountain West not sponsoring men’s swimming this year, the squad traveled to the Conference USA Invitational to compete against SMU and East Carolina. TCU returns to action tomorrow with the 200-free relay, 400-individual medley, 100-fly, 3-meter diving 200-free, 100-breast and 100-back.
