MONTEREY PARK, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) -
UNLV swept both relays in conference-record setting times on Wednesday night, including a nail-bitter with Wyoming, to take the first day lead at the 2013 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Men's Swimming & Diving Championships. The 25th-ranked Rebels stand with 80 points, while Wyoming is the next closest team with 66 among the 10-team field.
The night's first event, the 200 medley relay, saw the Rebels blow away the field, winning by over two seconds with a new MPSF record time of 1:25.63. That was just .04 seconds off the UNLV record, and is also a NCAA 'A' automatic qualifying mark. Making up the relay squad was Henrique Machado, David Szele, Cody Roberts and Dillon Virva.
The second race was much closer, but still had the same result, with the Rebels' 800 free relay squad winning in a time of 6:28.53, just .09 seconds ahead of Wyoming. It was also the second-fastest time in UNLV history, .13 seconds off the school record, and is a 'B' provisional standard. Swimming this relay for UNLV was the quartet of Samuel Lameynardie, Tom Paco-Pedroni, Balint Batka and Giacomo Gremizzi.
The four-day meet continues on Thursday and Friday before concluding on Saturday. Thursday will also see the first diving action, which is being held at the Air Force Academy.
