New Mexico in third place after first day of Mountain West championships

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The University of New Mexico swimming and diving team is in third place after the first day of competition at the MW swimming and diving championships. Conference newcomer Boise State currently leads the pack with 108 points while defending champion San Diego State sits in second with 101 points and the Lobos are in third with 99.

The first day of competition was short with only three events: the 1-meter springboard, 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay taking place.

Ashlee Erickson topped off a spectacular senior campaign with a first place finish in her best event, the 1-meter board. Erickson edged out San Diego State's Kristen Meier for the crown with a final score of 311.85 this is the first time Erickson has medaled throughout her time at UNM. Teammates Megan Harper and Michole Timm also placed in the top eight. Harper was fourth with a score of 263.20 and Timm was fifth with 261.70.

In the 200-yard medley relay the Lobo team composed of Jorgi Hobson, Stelicia Flores, Ashley Blanchette and Marissa Campbell finished fifth with a time of 1:42.54. The time is a new school record besting the final of 1:44.10 set by Hobson, Flores, Blanchette and Heidi Zeiger at the 2011 MW S&D Championships.

Aside from shattering a school record the team turned in an NCAA B cut qualifying time. This is the first time since the creation of the conference that a New Mexico team has qualified for postseason.

In the final event of the night, the 800-yard freestyle relay, UNM finished last with a final time of 7:36.70. The team was composed of Monica Dudley, Heidi Zeiger, Anna Lillitstrom, and Tesse Maciejko.
