Freshman Wins 50 Free MPSF Title
Feb. 21, 2013
MONTEREY PARK, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) -
UNLV won one of four events on Thursday night and are in third place after two days of action at the 2013 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Men's Swimming & Diving Championships. The 25th-ranked Rebels currently stand with 219 points, while Wyoming jumped up to the second day lead with 230.5 points, and BYU is second with 228.
For the first time in six years the Rebels did not win a conference title in the 200 free relay, as UNLV finished second in the event to BYU by .25 seconds after posting a time of 1:18.55. That was still the fourth fastest time in UNLV history, and is a NCAA 'B' standard as well. Making up the relay team was Dillon Virva, who set a new conference 50 free record when he led off the relay with a time of 19.91, Guilherme Passos, Tom Paco-Pedroni and Cody Roberts.
The next event was the 500 free, and a pair of Rebels finished in the top-eight. Joe Riggert placed fourth in a time of 4:23.65, but did post a 'B' time in the morning session. Matt Roe meanwhile placed sixth in 4:29.38. UNLV settled for another runner-up finish when Giacomo Gremizzi was upset in the 200 IM after losing to Wyoming's Adam Kalms by .20 seconds, as Gremizzi would turn in a time of 1:46.30.
UNLV's best event of the night was the 50 free, as Virva nearly matched his record-setting swim to open the night. The freshman won the race in 19.92, which is a 'B' time, and he is the fifth different Rebel in the last six years to win the 50 free title at the conference championships. Passos joined Virva in the top-eight, placing sixth in 20.30, while Roberts was eighth in 20.52.
The four-day meet continues on Friday before concluding on Saturday.
