MONTEREY PARK, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) -
The 25th-ranked UNLV men's swimming and diving team won four events on Friday night, all in new conference record times, on the third day of action at the 2013 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Men's Swimming & Diving Championships, held on the East Los Angeles College campus. This year's edition of the league championship looks like it will go down to the final event, as the top three teams are separated by just 16.5 points, with BYU holding the third day lead at 417, followed by UNLV in second at 412 and Wyoming third at 401.5.
UNLV would actually win the night's first three events, beginning with the 400 medley relay, where the Rebels won by over two full seconds in a NCAA 'A' automatic time of 3:10.30. That's the third fastest time in school history, and marked the 11th straight year the Rebels have won a conference title in the event. Swimming on the relay squad was Henrique Machado, David Szele, Cody Roberts and Samuel Lameynardie.
The next event was the 400 IM, and Giacomo Gremizzi held off swimmers from Wyoming and BYU to claim his second conference title in three years, and first in the MPSF after touching the wall in 3:47.07, a NCAA 'B' time, and .16 ahead of second place and a new league record. Also scoring in the event was Matt Roe, 10th in 3:57.90 and Joe Riggert, 11th in 3:58.77.
UNLV's third win was delivered by senior Cody Roberts, who won his third career 100 fly title (first in MPSF) with a swim of 46.71, a new conference record and a 'B' time. He was one of three Rebels in the top eight, with Dillon Virva placing sixth (47.96) and Balint Batka eighth (48.30). Andrew Mooers also scored, finishing 13th in 49.14.
The final win came from Szele in the 100 breast, with a new league record time of 53.54. It was a 'B' time as well, and marked the third straight year a Rebel has won a title in the event, but the first by Szele. Machado narrowly missed adding to the win total, as he was runner-up in the 100 back in 47.39 after being out-touched by Denver's Kyle Milberg by .05 seconds. Machado did post a 'B' time with his swim, the second-fastest time in UNLV history. Batka placed 10th in the event in 49.37, and Mooers was 16th (51.01).
UNLV also scored in the 200 free, with Lameynardie and Tom Paco-Pedroni posting a fifth and sixth place finish in times of 1:37.73 and 1:37.80, respectively. Both times were under the NCAA 'B' mark.
The four-day meet continues on Friday before concluding on Saturday.
