Szele Shines On Day Two At NCAA Champs
March 29, 2013
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (UNLVRebels.com) -
Junior David Szele's first All-American (honorable mention) swim of his career on Friday night was the highlight of the day for UNLV at the 2013 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships. The three-day meet, which concludes on Saturday, is being held at the IU Natatorium. UNLV now stands in 28th place in the team standings with 12 points.
Szele finished in 15th place in the 100 breast after posting a time of 53.69 in the consolation heat. His time of 53.04 in the morning session was a career-best, and .24 off the UNLV school record. Due to his 15th place finish, Szele earned the first honorable mention All-American status, and he is the first Rebel to ever score in the 100 breast at the NCAA championships.
UNLV nearly had a second swim in the night scoring finals, as the 200 medley relay was on pace for a top-10 finish in the morning preliminaries. However, the relay was disqualified due to a early start by one Rebel, by just .02 seconds. Making up the relay squad was freshman Henrique Machado, Szele, senior Cody Roberts and freshman Dillon Virva.
Two more Rebels had swims in individual events in the morning session. Roberts would place 28th in the 100 fly with a time of 47.15, while junior Giacomo Gremizzi was 31st in the 400 IM after touching the wall in 3:51.03.
Michigan leads the team standings at 336, while California is second at 301.5 and Arizona has moved up into third place at 234.5.
