Aug. 21, 2012

GREENSBORO, N.C. - After a long four days in the humidity of North Carolina, Diving Coach Abel Sanchez and his team of stellar divers returned to the Duke City just in time for the start of the new school year.

Sanchez as well as Ashlee Erickson, Michole Timm and Megan Harper traveled to the Tar Heel State to participate in the AT&T National Diving Championships. Erickson, the veteran of the group, and Timm participated in the most events as they competed in the 1-meter springboard and the 3-meter springboard, both along and as a synchronized team. Megan Harper, who was the other Lobo in attendance, competed in the 1-meter and 3-meter events.

The first day, Aug. 14, saw all three Lobos fail to make it to the final round off the 1-meter board. Ashlee Erickson finished the highest of the three with a quarterfinal score of 235.00 that put her in 15th place. Michole Timm and Megan Harper came in 19th and 20th with scores of 216.30 and 210.65, respectively.

Next up was the 3-meter springboard which took place on Wednesday, Aug.15. Erickson's performance in the quarterfinal round and her score of 253.85 was good enough to put her in 14th place; the top 14 divers would advance to finals. In the semi-final round, she placed seventh with a tally of 273.60.

Thursday saw the Lobos participate in the 3-meter springboard; in the quarterfinal round the pairing of Timm and Erickson placed fourth with a score of 241.62. Unfortunately, the pair fell to fifth during the final round with a final score of 258.24.

Sunday was the final day of competition and the final in the 3-meter springboard was held. Erickson was the only Lobo to make it to the final round, her score of 238.25 put her in 12th place.

The Lobo divers, along with the rest of the UNM swim team, has these last two weeks of August and the full month of September to train before they depart for Colorado Springs, Colo., for their first meet of the season against Air Force.
