Rebels Split With Denver, Fall To Arizona

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's and women's swimming and diving teams swam their home opener on Saturday afternoon with a double-dual meet against Arizona and Denver at Buchanan Natatorium. The Rebel men (1-1) came from behind by winning the final relay to edge out Denver 151-149, but were topped by No. 11 Arizona 180.5-114.5. On the women's side, UNLV (0-3) dropped a close meet to DU by a 152.146.5 score, while the Arizona women came out on top by a 118-105 score.

UNLV was trailing Denver by a 145-138 score entering the afternoon's final event, the 400 free relay. The Rebels' two relays would take first and third to earn 13 points in the event for the victory. One of the top performers from the men's team from the entire meet when including Arizona swimmers was Balint Batka, who won the 200 fly in a time of 1:48.57. The men's other first place swim came from Giacomo Gremizzi in the 200 IM (1:49.77). Joe Riggert posted second place swims in both the 500 free (4:34.60) and the 1000 free (9:26.93). Freshman Henrique Machado was second in the 100 back (49.36) while classmate Dillon Virva placed second in the 50 free (20.97). UNLV also placed second overall in both the 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay.

On the women's side against both teams, the Rebels won three events, paced by Mariah Skeen sweep of the diving events. Skeen scored 250.05 on the 3-meter in the day's first event, and a 289.00 on the 1-meter event later in the meet. UNLV also won the third event of the day thanks to Jessica Heim's time of 10:18.85 in the 1000 free. Other strong swims on the day came from Heim in the 500 free (3rd, 5:04.75) and Katelyne Herrington in the 100 fly (55.43). The Rebels placed second in the 400 free relay.

UNLV will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 3, with a home meet against former conference rival BYU at 2 pm in Buchanan Natatorium.
